If you've been past the Carss Park Community Centre (the old bowling club that has been home to SGCS for the past three years), you may have noticed the very productive community gardens behind the main building. The gardens are managed by a keen team of gardeners under the supervision of Kogarah City Council. Council, after a suggestion from us, have recently built four raised garden beds for use by members of the local community. As far as we know, these are the only beds like this at a community garden anywhere in Sydney, so we're very happy the Kogarah City Council saw the need and helped out. These four raised beds are designed for people who cannot get down and weed and plant at ground level. Two have an additional feature of being fully wheelchair-accessible, including access paths and turning spaces. Of these four beds, two have been set aside especially for clients of SGCS which is a very exciting development for us. So, if you're interested in being an occasional or a regular user of these beds, give us a call on 8558 4000. |

What a fitting finale to celebrate the festive season and the end to hundreds of shopping bags, outings and bus trips. For the first time we attempted to combine all our social outings groups and the result was amazing! Thanks to the wonderful support of Nino at Doltone House, the entire fleet of St George Community Transport, the children's choir from Mater Dai Primary School, Emma and Jessica Iuliano, daughters of Laura our Shopping and Social Outings coordinator and of course Santa who was our very own Darren Strachan a regular volunteer with the shopping service. Darren is also the husband of Carol our Finance Manager! The guests were treated to a beautiful lunch, a glass of bubbles and waited on by the fantastic staff of Doltone House. The event involved an enormous amount of coordination and thanks to the team of Laura, Veronica and Debbie. A huge thank you to our sponsors who provided donations so each client was able to go home with a lovely gift bag. We hope to repeat the effort next year! |

| This year the Lynch Pin was presented to a thoroughly deserving staff member who has been in service with the organisation for over 21 years - Mrs Georgia Tarpouka, Bookkeeper - Well Done. |
![]() | Volunteers are the life blood of our community and are often unrecognised for their valuable, selfless commitment. The annual NSW Volunteer of the Year Award recognises the outstanding efforts of the 2.4 million volunteers in NSW, promotes the importance of volunteering to the community and to companies. As our work at St George Community Services is dependent on volunteer involvement the Shopping and Social Outings Team nominated Mrs Melvina Khoury for the regional award. |
Melvina is a quiet achiever. She is on hand to help with any task we ask of her. In recognition of her efforts she won the regional award and is seen here being presented with her award by Councillor Carol Proven. Melvina is now on her way to Parliament House for the National Awards on 5 December and all at SGCS wish her luck! |

Some forty local businesses and community groups battled it out racing hospital beds down the main street which was filled with over forty food and art/craft market stalls.
